Kids seem to be using cell phones younger and younger nowadays. You may be one of the many parents that allow their child to use your cell phone for entertainment and safety purposes. Regardless if you pay for your cell phone service, or if it’s free because you’re a recipient of the Lifeline Assistance program, we recommend that you go over responsible cell phone use with your child.
What are some of the things you should teach your child about responsible cell phone use? We suggest going over specific rules and regulations, such as when they can use your phone, who they can call and how they can safely use the cell phone. Here are some things to consider talking to your child about regarding their cell phone use:
- Talk to your child about who they can call or text and how many minutes they may use. Consider an allotted amount of minutes that you feel is appropriate for your child.
- It’s important to review safety rules with kids regarding cell phones, too, including setting a limit on sharing personal details via text and phone calls.
- Many predators attempt to contact victims through anonymous cell phone texting and calling. Tell your child to report anything suspicious to you.
- Consider buying a device or cover to protect the phone. Kids can be rough with electronics, so check out some device protection that could withstand a fall or even provide waterproof protection.
- Always examine your cell phone usage, regardless if you pay for your service or receive Lifeline Assistance service. Examining your usage regularly can also help ensure you’re taking advantage of the best phone plans available.
Not all families have cell phones, of course. If your family doesn’t have one, it can be a challenge to take on yet another monthly bill. Consider applying for the Lifeline Assistance program, which provides free or discounted cell phone service to qualifying low income individuals and families.
Certain Lifeline providers also provide a free cell phone with up to 250 free monthly minutes. While there is only one phone allowed per residence, it could help you communicate with your family by being able to send and receive calls as well as text messages.
